Photographs

Sadly we know very little about the subjects of most of these pictures. The photographs were probably placed inside books for safekeeping, but eventually forgotten.

The first photograph shows a wax bust, probably of John Hunter. An inscription on the back reads, "Photo of wax, belonging to late W. Gemmell given me by RMB 6/8/20". The photograph was found in Two Great Scotsmen: the brothers William and John Hunter by George R. Mather (Glasgow, Maclehose, 1893).

The second photograph shows a nurse holding a baby (c. 1900). Unfortunately we don't know their names, or anything else about them.

The photograph of the old woman was found in volume 2 of The Collected Papers of Joseph Baron Lister (Oxford Press, 1909). We don't know who she is, or when the photograph was taken.

The two 19th century prints of an elderly man were found in the 2nd volume of Cutaneous Medicine by Louis A. Duhring (Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott, 1897).
