A New Generation

During the 1860s and 1870s a new generation of young doctors and surgeons were changing the face of medicine in the city. As well as the familiar names of Lister and Macewen, this new generation included future College president and advocate of antiseptic surgery Hector Cameron. Some figures remain relatively unheralded in their work in new fields, for example Alexander Robertson and James Fleming and their exploratory work on brain function in the 1860s.

Hector Cameron was a surgeon and past president of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He studied under the supervision of Joseph Lister and was subsequently a strong supporter of the antiseptic principle. He held many important positions during his career, including the Chair of Clinical Surgery at the University of Glasgow.
