Title

Cased Set of Hernia Repair Instruments - Case

Description

Constructed of solid mahogany, with some brass decoration on the outer surface.
A brass ornamental escutcheon is let into the central upper surface of the case.
Also, on both the upper and lower surfaces of the case, brass screw heads are used in a decorative manner, with the screw slots aligned parallel to the length of the case.
The case also has a fitted brass lock with ornamental key escutcheon. No key is present.

Interior of the case lid: Has a wooden insert for retaining four surgical instruments, now all missing, two of which were probably surgical spring forceps, judging from the shape of the fitted wooden insert. Has a small paper slip marked "Milliken and Lawley 165 Strand, London" placed in the top left corner of the inner lid.

Lower body of the case: Contains two sections, separated by a thin wooden divider.
Section 1: A closed compartment, 19.2cm long by 2.0cm wide, with an interference fit wooden lid, and small brass turned handle.
Section 2: Residual area of lower body of case. Is 19.2cm by 6.2cm in size, has no cover, but contains two brass transverse plates, slotted to receive surgical instruments. Has a thin ivory strip inlaid into the inner edge of this section.
