Joe Smernicki was born in Blairgowrie, Perthshire, and graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in 1973. Since then he has worked as an art teacher in the Tayside area whilst continuing to paint in his own time. He currently lives in Montrose and in 2009 he retired from his post as Head of Expressive Arts at Arbroath Academy in order to become a full-time artist. His home town of Montrose is the main source of inspiration for his landscapes and seascapes.
