Hood was born in Edinburgh in 1932 and educated in Glasgow. After being apprenticed to a lithographer he studied at Glasgow School of Art, where he subsequently worked before becoming a full time artist. He was a member of the Glasgow Art Club and a friend of fellow Scottish artist Alexander Goudie.
