Robert Hume gained his MBChB from the University of Glasgow in 1953. Hume specialised in haematology and worked for a time as a Consultant Physician at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow. He served as President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from 1990 to 1992.
