He specialised in orthopaedi surgery, going on to work as a consultant at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. He then was head of the orthopaedic department at the Glasgow Victoria Infirmary- this department was one of the first in Scotland to carry out total joint replacements. Besides his work as an orthopaedic surgeon, he often acted as an examiner for the surgical examinations held at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow.
