Wright gained his MD from the University of St Andrews in 1765, after which he was admitted to the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He became the first President of Anderson's University after its foundation in 1796. Wright was president of the College on several occassions; 1771 to 1773, 1777 to 1779, 1785 to 1787, 1795 to 1797, and 1804 to 1806.
