Andrew Watt Kay studied at the University of Glasgow, graduating MBChB with honours in 1939. He then gained his MD with honours in 1944 and ChM with honours in 1949. In 1956 he undertook the position of Consultant Surgeon at the Glasgow Western Infirmary. He then suceeded Sir Charles Illingworth at the University of Glasgow as the Regius Professor of Surgery in 1964. Kay was President of the College from 1972 to 1974.
