During his time at art school, he met his future wife Nadia Rossi, whom he married in 1966. In 1967, MacDonald became a designer at The Morris Furniture Group, and afterwards attended teacher training at Jordanhill College of Education. He subsequently taught as an art teacher until his early retirement in 1991. Best known for his landscapes, his work has been associated with the Scottish Colourist tradition through its brightness of colour and fluidity of texture. He died on the 13th of September 2008.
