He attended the Edinburgh College of Art from 1909-1912. Afterwards, Hutchison studied in Paris, while employing himself painting portraits, landscapes and figure paintings. He enlisted during the First World War, serving in the Royal Garrison Artillery and being stationed in Malta. After 1918, he and his wife occupied a flat in Edinburgh until 1921, when he moved to London. He was an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy, President of the Royal Scottish Academy and a member of the Royal Society of Arts. He was Director of the Glasgow School of Art from 1933 to 1943. Upon leaving Glasgow School of Art, he continued to paint portraits in Edinburgh and London until his death on the 5th February 1970.
