His father's name was 'Hendry' and George dropped the 'd' from his surname as a young man. He was a prominent member of the Glasgow School, working alongside various members such as James Guthrie, Edward Walton, Joseph Crawhall and Arthur Melville. In 1893 he went to Japan with Edward Atkinson Hornel, another member of the Glasgow Boys, for an 18 month tour. His work thereafter continued to have strong Oriental influences. He is known for his richly coloured and highly decorative portraits and figure paintings.
