We have been collecting books both old and new ever since, and our collection of rare books stretches back to the 15th century. We hold many fine examples of important historical texts, with particularly strong representation in medicine, surgery, botany and materia medica from the 18th and 19th centuries. We also hold a collection of several thousand medical pamphlets from the 18th to the early 20th centuries. Most of the book collection can be found on our online catalogue and we regularly add new records to make our collections more discoverable. Title A name given to the resource William Beatty's Tourniquet Description An account of the resource Within <a href="https://heritage.rcpsg.ac.uk/items/show/id/54">William Beatty's surgical kit</a> is found a Petit-type tourniquet. This style of tourniquet was designed by French surgeon Jean Louis Petit and was the first tourniquet that did not require two people to administer. Through the screw mechanism, the tourniquet could be tightened to apply the appropriate pressure and left around the patient's arm. Title A name given to the resource William Beatty's Amputation Knife Description An account of the resource William Beatty was a naval surgeon aboard the HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. This amputation knife is part of his <a href="https://heritage.rcpsg.ac.uk/items/show/id/54">surgical kit</a> that is held within the College's museum collection. Note the slight curve of the blade of this amputation knife, a popular style during the late 1700s and early 1800s. Curved blades would be replaced by straighter blades in the mid-1800s to ensure more accurate incisions. Title A name given to the resource Surgical instruments of William Beatty Description An account of the resource Wooden box with a brass handle and plaque inscribed "William Beatty, Royal Navy", containing instruments including a screw tourniquet, an amputation knife with detachable handles, two trephines and forceps. Inset into the box lid, behind a velvet-covered panel, are more instruments, including a fine-toothed bow saw, a knife, a hook and forceps. Gifted to the Royal Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1924 by Mr William Ewing Gilmour of Rosshall, Sutherlandshire, at the instigation of J.B. Hilliard, instrument maker. William Beatty was a naval surgeon during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815), and was present at the death of vice Admiral Horatio Nelson during the Battle of Trafalgar. Admiral Nelson was shot through the shoulder with a musket ball, perforating both lungs before lodging beneath his right scapula.
